“Cutting Shapes to the Figure”
Service
the Period Mantua-Maker's Draping Method
DO YOU STRUGGLE TO GET A GOOD FIT USING COMMERCIAL PATTERNS FOR 18TH CENTURY GOWNS?
THEN YOU NEED LINING SHAPES CUT TO FIT YOU!
Using the methods of 18th century mantua makers, I will drape and cut a set of fabric pieces called “shapes” that fit you precisely. Shapes can be used directly as the fitted lining of your garment, or traced off to create a basic master pattern that can easily be adapted to make a variety of 18th century outer garments such as gowns or fitted jackets. This method is exactly the right foundation for such garments, especially if you are following the order of operations and using period construction techniques as used by mantua-makers of the period.
For a demonstration of how this is done, please watch this video on my YouTube channel.
With such a set of shapes cut for you, there is no need for a conventional pattern nor indeed in most cases any need to make a mock-up before cutting your good fabric for your gown.
Included in this service will be full advice on how to use the shapes I have cut for you as a basic pattern to make fitted 18th century gowns and jackets.
